For my business partner Peter Triassi Montreal was something which he really wanted to incorporate into our business name when we first set up our content writing service. Peter was born and raised in the city which he left in his 20s and so I couldn’t really say no when he wanted us to give the name a bit of a Montreal twist. As it happens the naming process took us some time and that is because we both recognized just how important it really was. The name which you give your business is absolutely everything, it is a powerful form of marketing, it is how you make the name memorable to customers and it is also the way in which you can bring customers through the door.
If you are coming up with a name for your business then here are some tips on doing just that.
Meaningful
Whilst you will want to have a catchy name which people can remember and which entices people to come and do business with you, the name does have to mean something. When Peter spoke to me about the Montreal thing I loved it because it meant that there was going to be a nice thread running thorough the name of the place. This is after all your business and you should add your own personal stamp on it.
Cryptic
Unless you have a product which is going to change the world like the MacBook or Facebook, then it is better that you completely avoid cryptic or mysterious names. Some think that this is a good way to name a business because of the fact that it will evoke curiosity but in the main the best thing that you can do is to keep it simple and pretty self-explanatory.
Length
Even if you do pick a long name for your business, everyone is going to shorten it when they speak about it so you may need to be careful when it comes to the length of the name. If you take a company like the United Colors of Benetton as an example, everyone simply shortens that to Benetton, make sure that if you go long, the shortened version still sounds cool.
Branding
Ultimately the name of your business is going to be on all of your branding and so it is always worth playing the plastic bag game when you think up a certain name for the business. Just picture someone on the high street with a bag that has your company’s name on it, and think about what that is going to look like. If you think it looks cool then go with it, if it doesn’t, move on and try another.
This is a decision which you shouldn’t take lightly and it is going to be very important that you make the decision based on the factors which we have listed here, get this right and the business will be well on its way to success.
