Since a large number of multinational and other companies have their offices in Singapore, a large number of people are relocating to Singapore for professional reasons, especially for a better job. Also students from South Asia and other places study in Singapore, due to the better educational facilities and career opportunities. Renting a condominium or apartment is usually too expensive for a young person, so they are interested in renting a room since rental rooms are available at a far lower cost. While the rooms are available in apartments and condos, many young people are interested in finding a suitable landed room for rent for multiple reasons.
Rental rates
A landed room is a room in a landed house, a property in which the owner owns the house and the area around it. Most of the landed houses were constructed a few decades ago or even earlier. Compared to apartments and condos which are part of an apartment/condo complex with swimming pools, gyms and other facilities, there are fewer facilities available in a landed house. So the maintenance cost of the landed house is lower, and so the owners can afford to rent the rooms at a lower rate. Hence landed rooms are recommended for students, young people who have a limited budget and are interested in the cheapest rental rooms available. There’s also another way to get cheaper apartments and condo and this is to compare Singapore expat rental. There are a lot of sites that offers this service.
Location
In Singapore, like in most large cities, some areas of the city, especially the central business district (CBD) were developed first. Many of the landed houses are located in the older areas of Singapore, which were developed decades or a century earlier.Though the landed houses are being demolished to construct multi storey buildings and commercial properties, rental rooms in the new properties are usually far more expensive. So students, professionals who wish to live in the older areas of Singapore, which are usually more expensive, renting affordable rooms, should consider landed rooms.
More flexibility
Though it is not widely discussed, many of the apartment complexes have a number of rules and regulations which young people may find restrictive. These restrictions include smoking, drinking, bringing friends to stay overnight, and wearing revealing clothes. If the young people play loud music or make a noise, especially at night, the neighbors may get disturbed and complain. These rules, regulations are often implemented strictly. In contrast the landed houses do not have families renting the property, only rooms which are rented, usually to single persons, so there are fewer restrictions on the tenants.
Other reasons
Since the landed rooms are located in the historic areas of Singapore, living in the area gives the tenant an opportunity to explore the historic monuments and other areas of Singapore. Depending on the size of the landed house, there are usually three to six persons sharing the landed house. This gives the tenant the opportunity to meet and spend time with new people, make new friends. Realizing that most young people do not have the money to spend on furniture, furnishing and kitchenware, the rooms are also furnished. The student/professional can choose from the different packages based on his budget.
