Coleman gives Bonduel taste of regionals

Bonduel had a split night at its double dual on Tuesday night, defeating Gillett/Suring and falling to Coleman.

In their match against Gillett/Suring, the Bears started with a pin from Colin Wussow at 285 pounds just 37 seconds into the match and never looked back in a dominating 57-15 over the Tigers.

The Bears benefited from three forfeits from the Tigers, at 106, 113 and 120 pounds. For a while it looked like the Tigers were going to get shut out by the Bears, until Chris Salereno suffered a pinfall loss to Sam Lemons at 145 pounds. Reid Winkler was able to pull off the pinfall victory at 170 pounds over Kaden Bergsbaken for another Gillett/Suring victory in an otherwise powerhouse performance from Bonduel.

In Match 2, the Bears put up a valiant fight, but came up just short in dropping a 44-31 decision to Marinette & Oconto Conference powerhouse Coleman.

For head coach Chris Rank, the match was an opportunity to face a couple of quality opponents early in the season to better assess the work that needs to be done before the critical part of the season in February.

“We have been doing this the last couple of years, and we knew that Gillett was going to be a little down this year,” Rank said. “They’ve got some very good wrestlers, though, and we were happy to start off with a victory against them.”

Coleman, on the other hand, was a completely different animal. A Wisconsin powerhouse for the last several years, Bonduel knew it would be a tough matchup.

“With Coleman, they have been strong in the sport of wrestling for many, many years,” Rank said. “We will see them in our regional, so we were able to see what we can do against them. They have another strong team this year, but we are hoping to give them a good run in the regional tournament.”

When asked who wrestled well for him Tuesday night, Rank immediately named Jordan Boldt and Isaac Banker, the team’s top wrestlers.

“Jordan normally wrestles at 132, but we moved him up to 138, and he did very well for us tonight,” Rank said. “Also, Isaac Banker at 170 wrestled very well for us and Jacob Giese at 195 had a good match.”

For Boldt, he realized that even though he had a successful night, he still has a lot of work to do.

“I would have liked for my second match to go a lot better that it did,” Boldt said. “It wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be, so I need to improve certain things. I am still out of shape a little bit. The shape you would be in for football is completely different then the shape in you need to be in for wrestling. It’s a completely different fitness level.”
