Guns stolen from unlocked vehicles

Three guns were reported stolen from unlocked motor vehicles in the last month, according to Shawano police.

Giving his monthly report to the Shawano Common Council on Wednesday, Chief Dan Mauel reiterated the department’s repeated public pleas that people lock their vehicles and remove their belongings.

“I keep saying, ‘Lock your cars and lock your stuff up,’ but for God’s sake don’t leave your guns in an unlocked car,” Mauel said. “Don’t even leave them in a locked car. That’s going into the hands of criminals.”

Thefts of items from motor vehicles have spiked by 126 percent so far in 2017 versus the first 10 months of 2016, from 23 last year to 52 this year.
