Working in Cold Weather

By Jeff Maciejewski,
Project Engineer, Boldt

Progress continues on ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano. In January, the concrete footing and foundation work was completed, and steel erection for the main addition began. Steel erection will continue through February and is projected to be completed by the end of March. Crews are also working on the build-out of the new central utility plant, which houses the majority of the facilities’ mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment. Completion of the central utility plant is a critical component to the project schedule.

The effects of the below normal temperatures are definitely being felt onsite. A total of 11 work days were lost in January due to poor weather. When crews are working, the winter conditions create a number of challenges and extra steps are often taken to ensure quality standards are being met. The snow and ice also create slip and fall safety hazards around the site; however, the crews have done an excellent job of managing the risk, and we have not had any injuries to date.
