Stockbridge-Munsee restore century old cemetery

BOWLER -- The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians is working on the final phase of restoring a century-old cemetery located the Town of Red Springs.

The Tribe assumed responsibility for the cemetery a little more than four years ago at the request of the Town of Red Springs.

"The cemetery was closed, very old and in bad shape," explained Tribal President Bob Chicks. "We knew that the cemetery was the burial site for some of our ancestors, so we agreed to restore the site."

Many of the original graves date back to 1858.

After bringing in ground penetrating radar (GPR) to help plot the cemetery site in 2002, more than one hundred additional graves were discovered.
