MIHS fall athletes honored

Menominee Indian varsity football coach Chris Clache knew what he was going to talk about when it was his turn at the podium during Menominee Indian High School's fall sports banquet Thursday night at the school.<br /><br /><!-- 1upcrlf2 -->"This was a pretty emotional year for me because of my personal loss and everything," Clache said, referring to the death of his father during the season.<br /><br /><!-- 1upcrlf2 -->Clache talked about the seniors and juniors coming to the funeral and bringing the team together as a group.<br />&l

Swimmers prepare for state

Six Shawano/Bonduel swimmers will get in a bus 8:30 a.m. Saturday and head down to the Natatorium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison to compete in the 42nd annual WIAA Division 1 girls swimming and diving state championships.<br /><br /><!-- 1upcrlf2 -->"I'm really excited," Mackenzie Buss said. "State is a lot different, there are more kids and the competition is stiffer.

"I'm really excited," Mackenzie Buss said. "State is a lot different, there are more kids and the competition is stiffer. There are a lot of teams from the Milwaukee area that we don't see too often."

Buss says she kind of likes that since she gets to see old friends.

Mews, Easker runners of year

Mallory Mews of Bonduel and Matthew Easker of Wittenberg-Birnamwood were named the Central Wisconsin Conference cross-country runners of the year.

The first-team boys all-conference selections included Wittenberg-Birnamwood's Eric Tomson and Bonduel's Tyler Cina.

The first-team girls all-conference selections included Wittenberg-Birnamwood's Jenni Berndt, Megan School, Leah Vosters and Kendal Wormuth.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood's Jessica Hegewald and Bonduel's Taylor Sohr and Decoteau Klemens earned second-team honors.

Soper signs with New Mexico State

Shawano swimmer Mackenzie Soper signed her letter of intent Wednesday to swim for New Mexico State next year in a small ceremony at Shawano Community High School.<br /><br /><!-- 1upcrlf2 -->"It's fun, it's exciting," Soper said of the signing ceremony at the school. "It's a lot of weight off my shoulders."<br /><br /><!-- 1upcrlf2 -->Soper visited New Mexico State during a recruiting trip in October. The trip was two days. Soper spent the first day getting tours and meeting with academic advisers.
