Florence Hanns

Florence Hanns, 98, passed away on Jan. 28, 2016, after a short illness at Marquardt Manor in Watertown.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy, two granddaughters, two great-granddaughters, four great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Florence and her husband, Howard, now deceased, owned and operated the Shawano Shoe Outlet for many years, remaining in Shawano when they retired.

Florence was cremated and will be interred in Nola Cemetery in Park Falls in May of this year.

MaryAnn R. Johnson, 84, of Clintonville, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at Greentree Health & Rehabilitation Center, Clintonville. The Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home & Crematory, Clintonville, is assisting her family.

Gunder Thompson

Gunder Earl Thompson, 81, Oconto Falls, went to his heavenly home on Monday morning, Feb. 8, 2016, surrounded by his family.

The only child of Earl and Dorothy (Bergmann) Thompson was born on April 20, 1934, in Oconto Falls, where he grew up, graduating from Oconto Falls High School with the Class of 1952.

On June 2, 1956, Gunder married Mabel Messinger at Grace Lutheran Church in Oconto Falls.

Gunder was employed at Scott Paper Co. for over 36 years before retiring in 1989. During retirement, Gunder pursued some favorite hobbies, including beekeeping, woodworking, gardening and spending time at his cottage. He also liked to drink coffee, tell stories and watch CNN. Each Christmas Eve, the ever-growing Thompson family would gather to listen to Gunder read “The Night Before Christmas.”

George F. Jeske

George F. Jeske, 91, of the town of Belle Plaine, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016 at ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano.

George Ferdinand Jeske was born on April 23, 1924, in the town of Belle Plaine, near Embarrass, to the late Adolph and Rose (Meisner) Jeske. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Embarrass. In his teen years, George worked for many area farmers until finding employment with Rouse Construction. He was a proud 55-year member of the Operating Engineers Local 139.

Donna M. Duffeck

Donna M. Duffeck, 78, a Manitowoc resident, died on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

Donna was born on Dec. 7, 1937, in Keshena, daughter of the late Mitchell Vigue and Phyllis (Lyons) O’Connor. She was a graduate of Shawano High School’s Class of 1955. On Oct. 9, 1976, she married Jerome Duffeck in Manitowoc. She worked at Mirro as a press operator for 35 years, retiring in 1995. Donna loved babysitting her grandkids but also enjoyed taking care of everyone. She also enjoyed cooking, going to the casino, flowers and gardening. Donna was a big fan of Elvis.

Dolores A. Scholz

Dolores (Laurie) Ann Scholz, 82, formerly of Gresham, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at Appleton Medical Center. She was born in Racine on Oct. 22, 1933, the daughter of the late Fredrick and Constance (Kessler) Kowalsky. Dolores married Bob Scholz on Nov. 8, 1952. He preceded her in death on April 4, 2010.

Laurie was a member and president of the Christian Mothers in Gresham and the Golden Agers in Tucson. She lived in Florida and Tucson, Arizona, in her retirement years. She enjoyed swimming, playing cards, and many enjoyed her culinary expertise (Homemade bread, Pecan rolls, and seven-layer bars).

Bonnie L. Fredrick, 73, of the town of Fairbanks, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, at ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano.

Cinda Engebretson

Cinda “Cindi” Engebretson, 61, of Shawano, passed away unexpectedly in an automobile accident on Monday, Feb. 1, 2016.

Cindi was born on May 2, 1954, daughter of the late James Engebretson and Patricia (Colligan) Engebretson. Cindi was a proud employee of the Clintonville School District for 28 years. Cindi enjoyed crafting, camping, working in direct sales, and traveling.

Cindi and Mike had just recently returned from a three-week vacation in Europe, something she always dreamed of doing. She will be fondly remembered by her pronounced laughter that filled the room.

Cindi is survived by her mother, Patricia; daughter, Shannon (Aaron Karnatz) Eckels; son, Ryan Eckels; sister, Lee Ann Mientke; brother, Robin (Joyce) Engebretson; significant other, Mike Olsen; and stepchildren, Brad and Dustin Bricco and Jami Young. Cindi was also grandmother to Taylor and Alyson Young, and Bryce, Caitlin, Kendall, Remy, Ryker, Noah and Kylee Bricco.

Snowstorm wipes out Tuesday games

The snowstorm that swept through the area Tuesday forced postponements of several high school sports contests in Shawano and elsewhere.

The Shawano Community High School girls basketball game at Green Bay East has been rescheduled for 7:15 p.m. Feb. 16.

The Shawano wrestling team’s dual meet with West De Pere has been moved to 7 p.m. Feb. 9, when the Hawks will also wrestle their original meet against Kewaunee at 6 p.m.

The Hawks’ hockey game vs. D.C. Everest will not be rescheduled.

The Bonduel High School boys basketball game in Iola-Scandinavia will be played at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The girls basketball game against Iola-Scandinavia will be played at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in Bonduel.

The Gresham boys basketball game in Rosholt has been moved to Feb. 22. Gresham’s girls home game against Rosholt will be played on Feb. 15. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Menominee Indian’s boys basketball game vs. Marion was moved to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Marian H. Boreen

Marian H. Boreen, 88, of Wittenberg, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at Ministry St. Clare’s Hospital, Weston.

She was born on May 11, 1927, in Wittenberg, the daughter of the late John and Mayme (Hamilton) Boreen.

Marian owned and operated the former Wittenberg Locker Plant. She also worked for Nueske’s Meats for a number of years. Marian enjoyed going to rummage sales, crocheting, knitting, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include one brother, Vernon (Marion) Boreen, Green Bay, and two sisters-in-law, June Boreen, Menomonie, and Esther Boreen, Wittenberg. She is also survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, Marian was preceded in death by six brothers, Howard, Floyd, Vincent, Kenneth, Arlyn and Donald, and two sisters, Gladys and Mildred.
