Pairings set for state wrestling

The WIAA State Individual Wrestling Meet will open in Madison on Thursday with four area wrestlers competing in the state championship event. Shawano's Rocky DeLorme, Marion's Joel Krueger and Bonduel's Scott Schmidt, all seniors, along with Bonduel's Rich Schmidt, a junior, will be going to a state title in their weight class. On Sunday, the WIAA announced the tournament pairings for the meet.

Shawano Invite heats up Lake

SHAWANO The Fire on Ice Auto Racing Club held its Shawano Invitational on Shawano Lake by the County Park on Saturday afternoon. Drivers from several area ice racing clubs were on hand to treat the spectators to a great show.

Witt-Birn student arrested on bomb threat

A Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School student was arrested Friday in connection with one of three recent bomb threats at the school.

According to Lt. Steve Conradt of the Shawano County Sheriff's Department, the 16-year-old girl has been referred to the Department of Social Services on a charge of making the third threat which occurred Feb. 15.

"The girl confessed to her involvement," said Conradt. "She denies any involvement in the threats made Jan. 10 and Feb. 10."

Benefit set for family of Cecil newborn

Bethel Lutheran Church along with AAL Branches 9517, 5269 and 7245 and L.B. Helping Hands Branch 8519 will be holding a chicken booyah and beef soup dinner on Sunday, Feb. 27 to help Jeff and Cindy Engebretsen of Cecil with medical expenses for their daughter Brenda Jean.

Brenda was born on Aug. 25 and has cerebral palsy. She spent the first weeks of her life in the NICU of St. Vincent Hospital. Brenda's treatments are ongoing and will need to continue for the foreseeable future.

Christian singer, survivor of plane crash, to perform

A Christian singer/songwriter will perform at St. John Lutheran Church in Mattoon Sunday, March 5 at 7 p.m.

Don Wharton of Nashville, Tenn. was one of seven people who survived a plane crash in the Bering Sea off Alaska in 1993. He credits the miracle to God, ands tells of the crash, rescue and survival as part of his concerts.
