With spring comes a season of severs storms

Spring has arrived in Wisconsin and with it comes the increased chance of tornadoes and other severe weather. To make sure proper emergency weather equipment and procedures are ready in the event of problem weather, April 10 through April 14 has been declared Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin.

Chmura arrested in Hartland

HARTLAND Green Bay Packers tight end Mark Chmura was arrested and jailed in Waukesha County early today, Hartland police said.

Chmura, 31, was arrested at 2:30 a.m. in Hartland, Lt. Robert Rosch said.

Chmura was booked into the Waukesha County Jail, said jail clerk Lorrie Granstrand. No other details were immediately released.

The Hartland Police Department planned a news conference later today regarding the arrest, Rosch said.

Young hunters take the turkey challenge

Some area young women and first time turkey hunters got a chance this weekend to take part in a special two-day turkey hunt sponsored by the Shawano Area Gobblers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Sixteen participants went on the two-day hunt this year and they bagged five birds. Last year, the first year of the event, there were 10 participants and two birds were bagged.

Singh stands tall, as Tiger, Love blow into contention

AUGUSTA, Ga. Tiger Woods was the least of anyone's worries.

This time, intimidation came from cold, wicked wind that knocked everyone but Vijay Singh into submission at the Masters and set the stage for a Sunday that promises to be thrilling, if not torturous.

"I've never seen a day like this before," Jack Nicklaus said Saturday after his 155th round and worst in the Masters.

SCHS girls soccer team making strides in first season

The year 2000 marks not only a new millennium, but also a new era in Shawano High School sports. This is the first season for the Shawano girls soccer program and already the team has turned a few heads.

In their first two games this season the Hawks have not lost a game finishing in a 1-1 tie at Kimberly and a scoreless tie at DePere.

"We have an enormous amount of athletic ability," says Shawano Head Coach Kate Groth. "When our skills and knowledge develop, we will have a great season."

Siberian exchange student warmed by help, kindness of Shawano area

A Russian foreign exchange student, attending Shawano Community High School, says she's deeply touched by the generosity and kindness she's received while in the United States and particularly in the Shawano area.

Olga Kirilchuk, 16, of Novosibirsk, Siberia, is receiving an education while in America, but she's also receiving medical help to recover from a tragedy that occurred when she was just 7 years old.
