Badgers fall to Spartans in Big Ten semifinals

AP Sports Writer

CHICAGO (AP) Defense, that's Wisconsin's game. It's Michigan State's, too.

On Saturday in the Big Ten tournament semifinals, the No. 5 Spartans played it better.

"It's a strange world and shots are not always going to go in. One thing you can do is go out and give great effort and play great defense," Michigan State guard Mateen Cleaves said after sparking the Spartans past the Badgers 55-46.

"If you can stop a team, you are going to win. We feed off our defense."

Brewers prepare for Home Run Central

AP Sports Writer

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) It won't take long to find the first victim of baseball's Home Run Central.

Look no further than the Milwaukee Brewers, who have the unenviable task of opening the season against Ken Griffey Jr.'s Cincinnati Reds and Mark McGwire's St. Louis Cardinals two of the three great sluggers in the National League Central.

Nearly every NL team will have to face either Griffey, McGwire or Sammy Sosa and the Chicago Cubs in back-to-back series, but only Milwaukee opens the season that way.

CHICAGO (AP) When the Big Ten's best defense and the league's worst team meet, one thing's for sure: It's going to be ugly.

Mark Vershaw scored 17 points and had five assists Thursday as Wisconsin beat Northwestern 51-41 in the lowest-scoring game ever at the Big Ten tournament. The 92 points topped the 98 scored in Northwestern's 54-44 victory over Penn State last year.
