New Marion bank under construction

Above is an artist\'s rendering of Marion State Bank\'s new building under construction. Bank officials expect it to open in July.

MARION A new Marion State Bank building is under construction, the latest in a series of expansions by the bank.

The new facility in the Industrial Park on Mavis Road will provide future expansion capabilities and will have approximately 22,000 square feet in two stories.

Optomist Club names students of the year, youths urged to continue their education

A total of 155 students including four students of the year were honored last night at the annual Shawano Community High School Scholastic Awards Banquet. The event was held at The Gathering and was sponsored by the Shawano Optimist Club.

Shawano Optimist Club president Al Kuck told the over 400 people in attendance the banquet is a chance for the community to honor Shawano's "best and brightest."

Bowler man pleads no contest in child sexual contact case

A Bowler man, charged with having sexual contact with a child who has not yet reached the age of 13, entered a no contest plea to the charge Thursday during an appearance in Shawano County Circuit Court.

Keith D. Welch, 63, of N9594 Moh He Con Nuck Rd., is accused of having sexual contact with the then 4-year-old girl between Jan. 1 and Dec. 16 of 1999.

Judge Thomas Grover set Welch's sentencing for June 2 at 8 a.m.

Welch earlier had entered a not guilty plea to the charge and waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Badgers in Elite Eight

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) Wisconsin wondered if LSU could handle its defensive pressure. The Badgers got the answer they wanted.

Eighth-seeded Wisconsin, a plodding but productive bunch, made it an all-Big Ten final in the West Regional with a 61-48 victory over the fourth-seeded Tigers on Thursday night.

As they did in beating Fresno State in the first round and then upsetting top-seeded Arizona, the Badgers relied on defense.

Bucks whip Pacers for huge road win

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Sam Cassell and his Milwaukee teammates remembered being swept out of last year's NBA playoffs by Indiana.

Thursday, they got their revenge.

Cassell scored 30 points and Ray Allen added 26 as the Bucks did something few teams have done this year: beat the Pacers at home.

The Bucks, who also got 21 points from Tim Thomas, held the Pacers to 38 percent shooting in their 105-84 win, snapping a six-game road losing streak.
