Teen charged with bomb threat at Witt-Birn pleads innocent

A Wittenberg area teenager, accused of making a bomb threat at the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School Jan. 12, was released on bond after a Thursday appearance in Shawano County Circuit Court.

Peter E. Rockman, 17, of W17911 Witt-Birn Town Line Rd, was charged earlier with one count of being party to the crime of making a bomb threat. At that time his bond had been set at $5,000 cash, but at Thursday's hearing and after considerable thought, Judge Thomas Grover agreed to lower Rockman's bond to $1,000 cash.

Sharp drop in jobless rate from a year ago

Wisconsin's unemployment rate of 2.8 percent in January was the lowest rate for the month in four decades and the second lowest rate in the nation, state labor officials announced Thursday.

Shawano and Menominee Counties saw their unemployment rates increase in January from December, but their rates were still lower than compared with January 1999.

Shawano County's unemployment rate for January jumped to 4.3 percent from 3.1 percent in December. In January of 1999 the Shawano County rate of unemployment stood at 5.1 percent

Claire Corbett's kindergarten class at Olga Brener Elementary listened intently Thursday morning as the Cat from the Dr. Seuss books read "The Cat in the Hat" and "Green Eggs and Ham." Children across the nation took time out of their school day to read and celebrate Dr. Seuss' 96th birthday as well as mark Read Across America Day.

Bears pound Nekoosa 61-41

GILLETT After receiving a bye in the first round of WIAA tournament action the Bonduel boys basketball team made easy work of Nekoosa Thursday night winning 61-41 to move on to the regional final.

The Bears got off to a slow start falling behind 13-9 after the first period. The Bears' leading scorer, J. C. Reinke, who went scoreless in the first period found his touch in the second quarter scoring nine points to lead Bonduel on an 18-6 run. With the big run the Bears built a 27-19 lead at the half and looked to be in control.

Gresham season ends with loss

TIGERTON The Gresham boys basketball team had its season come to an end Thursday night with a 63-37 loss to Iola in WIAA regional competition. This was the second meeting of the two teams in less than a week with Iola getting revenge from a loss to the Wildcats last Friday.

Bowler moves on to regional final

ALMOND The Bowler boys basketball team continued to roll beating Wild Rose 66-42 in WIAA regional action Thursday night. The win moves the Panthers into the regional final on Saturday against Iola.

The Panthers used a 20-14 run in the second period to break open a one-point game and cruised the rest of the way for the 24-point win. Bowler held a slim 11-10 lead after the first period before taking control of the game.
