8 Bears qualify for sectionals

Banker, Giese place first

Led by eight sectional-qualifying wrestlers, Bonduel turned in a second-place team finish in the Division 3 Coleman Regional at Coleman High School on Saturday.

Bonduel earned 203.5 points on the day, finishing only behind Coleman, which scored 337 points and qualified for team sectionals.

Isaac Banker (182) and Jacob Giese (195) each placed first for Bonduel, taking advantage of their double byes. In his lone match of the day, Banker pinned Coleman’s Cole Klimek in just 1 minute, 52 seconds. In his only match, Giese pinned Coleman’s Jonathon Bieber in just 39 seconds.

Gavin Bougie (106), Luis Lagunes (113), Jayson Toellner (120), Max Sokolski (126), Moises Lagunes (152) and Colin Ewing (160) all placed second for the Bears.

Wrestling against just one other wrestler at 106 pounds, Bougie was guaranteed a spot at sectionals before even taking the mat. He was pinned in his lone match of the day.

After a bye, Luis Lagunes pinned Menominee Indian’s Chad Reiter-Wilber in five minutes. After dropping a major decision, Luis Lagunes was awarded second by rule over Reiter-Wilber.

Toellner, Sokolski, Moises Lagunes and Ewing took similar paths to their second-place finishes.

After a bye, Toellner earned a 13-1 major decision win over Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy’s Kevin Chang before dropping an 8-1 decision. Toellner was awarded second by rule over Chang. After his own bye, Sokolski pinned Lena/STAA’s Franky Umentum in 34 seconds before falling by a 10-1 major decision. Sokolski came in second by rule over Umentum.

After a bye, Moises Lagunes earned a 17-2 technical fall victory over Menominee Indian’s Gregory Turney before falling by technical fall. Moises Lagunes took second by rule over Turney. Ewing earned a tight 7-6 decision win to open his day after a bye. Ewing then lost by pin, but finished second by rule over Lena/STAA’s Kiko Cajigas.

Jakob Froemming (145), Kaden Bergsbaken (170) and Alex Garside (220) all placed third for Bonduel.

Menominee Indian

Menominee Indian came in third as a team with 107 points, with Morgun Fish (145) and Hunter Connahvichnah (220) each placing second to qualify for sectionals.

After a bye, Fish pinned Froemming in 2:53 before losing a match by pin. Fish placed second by rule over Froemming. Connahvichnah opened his day with a pin in 5:06 over Garside. After losing by pin, Connahvichnah was awarded second by rule over Garside.

Reiter-Wilber, Alfred Hernandez (132), Turney, Leone Peters (182), Darius Wayka (195) and Saswaen Shawanokasic (285) all placed third for Menominee Indian.

The two Menominee Indian and eight Bonduel wrestlers who qualified for sectionals will take part in the Bonduel Sectional, which will be held at Shawano Community High School this Saturday.
