Donald F. Legler Sr.

Donald F. Legler Sr., 85, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Don was born March 7, 1933, in Green Bay, a son of the late Ellsworth and Luella (Koch) Legler. He attended Milwaukee schools, graduating from Custer High School in 1952. Following school, Don was drafted into the United States Army in 1953 and served until 1955. He was stationed in Germany in the Artillery Unit of the First Division and played football in special services. On June 13, 1953, he was united in marriage to the former Marilyn “Toots” Lompa at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Milwaukee. Upon returning from service, Don was employed as a sheet metal worker for over 40 years, retiring in 1994. He was a lifetime member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 18 of Waukesha.

Don was a member of the Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Milwaukee, where he served as a Eucharistic minister, a member of the Holy Name Society, an elected member of the parish council as secretary and had ex-officio position as trustee. He served as a scoutmaster for six years. Don enjoyed spending time at the lake with his children and grandchildren, gardening, yard work and puttering in the garage. Don is currently a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Marilyn “Toots” Legler, of Shawano; his children, Donald F. (Cindy) Legler Jr., of West Bend, David (Gayle) Legler, of Seymour, Diane (Randy) Worm, of Waupun, Daniel (Tammy) Legler and Dennis Legler, of Milwaukee, Duane (Barbara) Legler, of Cedar Grove, Douglas (Michele) Legler, of Milwaukee, Dean (Tia) Legler, of Pewaukee, and Doreen (Ronald) Wall, of Port Washington; 28 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Lois Legler.

A funeral Mass for Donald F. Legler Sr. will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. Father Tom Farrell will be the celebrant. Visitation will begin at the church at 9 a.m. and continue until the hour of Mass. Full military honors will be accorded by Shawano AmVets Post 10 at the church.

In lieu of flowers and plants, the family requests memorials be made in Don’s name to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
