City finance committee discusses budget Wednesday

Shawano city officials are still awaiting some key numbers before being able to finalize a 2019 budget proposal, but the finance committee is scheduled to meet next week for one of its last meetings before sending a proposed budget to the Common Council.

Council President Sandy Steinke took the unusual step of highlighting Wednesday’s committee meeting under new business at this week’s council meeting, noting the meeting will be open to the public.

Her comments hinted that something of public interest could be discussed, but city officials are not saying what that might be.

The finance committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 127 S. Sawyer St.

“There are some proposals being discussed and some issues that they might be willing to make public at that time,” City Administrator Brian Knapp said.

“Right now, they’ve only had this discussion in closed session and I’m not prepared to share it,” he said, adding only that the issue is related to city operations.

Meanwhile, the city is waiting for health insurance estimates, manufacturing numbers and assessments to be finalized on a revaluation of commercial properties before the committee can finalize a budget, probably at another meeting the following week.

The Board of Review will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday to see if any of those revaluations will be contested.
