Second half charge lifts East over Shawano

Hawks fall to 0-3 overall

The first half of the Bay Conference matchup between Shawano and Green Bay East was a defensive showcase. The second half was full of offensive fireworks.

Green Bay East scored 28 second half points to down Shawano 34-20 on Friday night in Green Bay.

Shawano started the game with the ball and immediately started working down the field. A direct snap to junior Brayden Dickelman on the first play of the game helped the Hawks move the ball into Green Bay East territory before a pass from sophomore Gage Timm to freshman wide receiver Elliott Lowney picked up 14 yards and put the ball on the 28.

A few plays later, Dickelman broke another long run to move Shawano all the way to the 2. A false start penalty proved to be costly for the visitors though, as the Red Devils’ defense stuffed the next three rush attempts before blocking a low field goal attempt.

Shawano’s defense forced a three-and-out to get the ball right back in plus-territory, but Green Bay East forced a three-and-out of its own to force a Shawano punt.

Starting on its 20 after a touchback, Green Bay East went on a long drive that was capped by a short rushing touchdown for the game’s first score.

Shawano’s offense responded with a long, 75-yard drive of its own, finished off by a Gage Timm rushing score. The Hawks passed the ball just once on the drive and featured Dickelman, Gage Timm and senior Crede Timm in the running game.

Shawano’s defense then forced a punt but the offense had its next drive stall just across midfield. The Hawks’ defense forced a three-and-out just before halftime and the score remained deadlocked at six.

Among the Green Bay East halftime adjustments was a change at quarterback, inserting a run-first threat in Hayden Ostertag. The move reaped an immediate impact, as the hosts capped a quick 70-yard drive with a Jeremiah Flowers rushing TD.

After Shawano had to punt, the Red Devils were set up nearly in the red zone after a long return. Four plays later, Flowers scored again to put the hosts up 14.

The Hawks returned to the ensuing kickoff to its own 42. Shawano again featured the running game on its way to the end zone, with Gage Timm and Dickelman leading the way before Dickelman powered in for the score.

On its next drive, the Red Devils’ offense continued to fire on all cylinders. After a personal foul penalty on Shawano, Green Bay East rushed their way to a third straight score to take a 14-point lead again.

The Hawks had an answer though, using Dickelman and Gage Timm in the running game before Dickelman busted loose for a 27-yard touchdown run.

On the ensuing kickoff, the hosts delivered a knockout punch when Flowers returned the kick 85 yards to immediately give the team its 14-point cushion back.

Shawano’s next drive ended in an interception, but Green Bay East missed a field goal to give the Hawks another chance. Shawano moved the ball into enemy territory before having the drive stall.

Shawano fell to 0-3 overall and in Bay Conference play. The team knows its slow start is a result of coming up short in pressure situations.

“If you look at the scores, we are playing close games,” senior Steve Hoffman said. “We just do some little things (right) and we can win those games. There isn’t that big of a spread between us (and opponents).”

Some of Shawano’s upperclassmen know they need to start leading by example so that the otherwise young team can stay positive through tough times.

“My job is to keep on my teammates, keep being positive and telling them they can do it,” senior Nick Grignon said. “Just give them confidence to come out and play hard.”

Shawano returns home next week to face Menasha on parents night.
