Hawks get 2nd at Preble invite

The Shawano volleyball has had a busy start to the fall season, playing a total of 13 matches across two tournaments.

On Tuesday, the Hawks earned a 4-1 record in the Preble Invitational to finish second. Shawano downed Fall River (25-16, 25-18), Winneconne (25-10, 25-19), Southern Door (25-21, 14-25, 16-14) and Green Bay Preble (25-20, 25-27, 15-5) while dropping a 25-17, 25-17 match to Southern Door.

Bayleigh Laabs totaled 64 assists and 26 digs across the five matches while Julia Klement had 13 attack kills and 32 digs. Abi Vomastic recorded 18 attack kills and 21 digs while Rachel Reed had 12 digs and six attack kills.

Katelyn Wilber, Margo Gull and Kyra Klement were credited with 18, 16 and 14 digs, respectively. Tori DePerry filled the stat sheet with nine digs, seven attack kills and six block kills.

The Hawks opened the year at the Friendship Tournament in Wisconsin Dells on Aug. 24-25. Shawano placed fifth after posting a 6-2 record.

The team lost to Green Bay Preble (25-20, 13-25, 15-10) and Lake Mills (25-12, 18-25, 15-10) while taking down Wittenberg-Birnamwood (25-19, 25-17), Clintonville (25-22, 25-16), Bruce (25-10, 25-21), Aquinas (25-20, 20-25, 17-15), Kettle Moraine (25-21, 17-25, 15-8) and Green Bay Preble (25-15, 25-12).

Over the tournament, Laabs led the Hawks with 129 assists and 22 digs while Reed had 12 attack kills and 10 block kills. Wilber finished with 21 attack kills and 16 digs, DePerry accumulated 14 attack kills while Julia Klement had 35 attack kills, 14 aces and 39 digs. Vomastic finished with 19 attack kills, 29 digs and seven aces while Kyra Klement and Gull had 20 and 15 digs, respectively.
