Chris Madden cruises to Sun Drop Shootout win

Champion started on the pole and led each lap

Chris Madden started in the pole position and led all 50 laps to claim first in Tuesday’s Sun Drop Shootout at Shawano Speedway.

The win moved Madden into a tie for first in the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series point standings with Mike Marlar, who finished seventh.

Madden and Jonathan Davenport led the field to the starting line before Madden began his dominance. He had built a comfortable lead by the time the first caution of the race occurred on lap seven. Before the green flag could be waved, another caution flag was brought out.

After green flag racing finally resumed, Madden again built a sizable lead. This time, the race was not halted by any more cautions and the 43-year-old Madden eased to his first career win at Shawano Speedway, securing the $10,000 to win feature race.

“Our hot lap went really well,” Madden said. “We got a good heat race, was able to get a win in the heat race and then draw a one for the feature. That was huge. We had a great race car tonight and everything went how it was supposed to go.”

Devin Moran won the first 10-lap heat race after starting in first. Madden then claimed the second heat race after starting in third. Davenport took first in the final heat race after also starting in first. Don O’Neal, Rick Eckert and Shane Clanton each took second in the respective heat races.

Moran also picked up the Fast Qualifier award after turning in the quickest qualifying time of 19.491 seconds. Brandon Sheppard was second in 19.6 seconds while Davenport was third at 19.81 seconds. Madden was eighth with a time of 19.978 seconds.

Clanton, a two-time winner at Shawano, finished second in the 50-lap feature while Davenport took third. O’Neal claimed fourth while Moran rounded out the top five. Eckert, last year’s Sun Drop Shootout winner, came in ninth while Sheppard took eighth after starting in 17th, earning the KSE Hard Charger Award.

The win was Madden’s sixth feature win of the season. The second-year World of Outlaws driver won six races last year on his way to a second-place finish in the point standings.

Shawano Speedway was hosting the 10th annual Sun Drop Shootout and has done so each year since 2010. The half-mile track first hosted the feature back in 1989.

“It’s pretty awesome (to race in Shawano),” said Madden, a South Carolina native. “I like these big places like this, kind of like we used to have around home that we loved to race on.”

Earlier in the night, Marcus Yarie claimed first in the IMCA Modifieds feature while Jordan Barkholtz continued his strong year on the track by taking first in the IMCA Stock Car feature.
