Junior wins sectional, competes at state for 1st time

Sam Tourtilott advanced to WIAA Division 1 State after clinching the sectional championship at 170 pounds on Feb. 17 with three dominating wins. Tourtilott pinned his first two opponents in the first period and picked up a major decision in the championship match for the title. The junior, who competed his first sectional and state tourneys, ended his season at state in Madison Friday with a loss in the wrestleback, but is hungry to get on the podium next year.

Q Where did your interest in wrestling begin?

A When I saw my older cousins become state champs. Since then, I’ve wanted to be one.

Q What’s your favorite part about wrestling?

A Seeing all of the hard work pay off.

Q What was your first sectional experience like?

A Exciting and fun; it was cool to make all those memories.

Q How did it feel taking the Division 1, 170-pound sectional title?

A It was the best feeling in the world.

Q What have you done during the season to establish yourself as a state-caliber wrestler?

A I worked hard in the weight room and in the practice room.

Q What is your favorite memory so far of Shawano wrestling?

A Seeing all of my teammates there to congratulate me after my sectional win.

Q Was there a victory this season that was the most satisfying for you?

A The sectional championship, because I knew my hard work was starting to pay off.

Q What athlete do you look up to and why?

A Jim Thorpe (Olympic athlete), because he was native and he was considered the greatest athlete of all time.

Q Do you have any pre-match rituals?

A I have to listen to an AC/DC song.

Q What’s your favorite thing to do in your free time?

A Hunt and fish.
