Public meeting will address Hwy. 47-55

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is conducting a public involvement meeting to discuss proposed improvements to state Highway 47-55 between Shawano Creek and the Menominee County line.

The meeting is Jan. 30 from 5-6:30 p.m., in the Community Room at Shawano City Hall, 127 S. Sawyer St., Shawano. A brief presentation is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The remainder of the meeting will follow an open house format.

Identified needs on this section of Highway 47/55 include deteriorating pavement, the absence of turn lanes, the railroad crossing needing surface repair and crossing gates, curb ramp conflicts with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and curb and gutter repair.

Proposed improvements include resurfacing the highway and widening the paved shoulders; modifying the intersections with County Road H, Maple Avenue, Frailing Lane and County Road A to improve traffic operations; replacing the pavement at the railroad crossing and installing new signals and gates; reconstructing all curb ramps to meet ADA requirements; and repairing some curb and gutter

An improvement project is currently scheduled for 2020. Additional information can be found on the WisDOT website,

WisDOT representatives are seeking the public’s input on the project’s purpose and need, schedule and proposed traffic management strategies during construction.

The Shawano City Hall is handicapped accessible. Citizens who are deaf or hard of hearing, and require an interpreter at the meeting, may request one by contacting Kristin McHugh at least three working days prior to the meeting via the Wisconsin Telecommunications Relay System (711).
