Pittsville took control of the lead in the final three matches to defeat host Bonduel 43-29 Thursday in a Central Wisconsin Conference matchup.

The Bears had a 6-3 edge over the Panthers to lead 29-15, but dropped the final five matches to secure the loss.

“It was a tough one for us tonight,” Bonduel head coach Chris Rank said. “We were hopeful of winning this match, but they’re strong in the middle-weights, and we just couldn’t overcome them.”

The Bears endured a setback with the loss of a top wrestler, senior Jacob Banker (182), who suffered a hand injury on Thursday.

“That was unfortunate for him and us,” Rank said. “Hopefully he’ll be back in a couple weeks, but that certainly made a difference in tonight’s match.

“There were a couple of big matches at the upper weights that we were hoping to get wins that we didn’t. So that hurt a little bit. So we need to work on making better decisions out there when we’re in trouble. February’s right around the corner and we need to be wrestling our best, so we need to make definite improvements in the next couple weeks.”

The Bears dropped two upper-weight matches. Henry Myers pinned Bonduel’s Colin Wussow (5:32) at 220 pounds and Pittsville’s Kyle Masanz defeated Seth Matz (fall 4:45) at 285 pounds.

Bonduel senior Jordan Boldt sealed the Bears’ final victory of the dual over Pittsville’s Matthew Grossman with a 2-1 ultimate tiebreaker at 132 pounds.

“I’ve wrestled (Grossman) before, and it’s always a long match,” Boldt said. “Last year I lost to him, so I didn’t want that to happen again. I’ve been working a lot to get in better shape, and I felt better tonight. I didn’t expect it to go that long, but I think my preparation helped for that.”

Boldt, who lost to Grossman in the first match of last year’s sectionals, had his eyes set on the rematch leading up to the dual.

“That’s a match I’ve been wanting,” he said. “I’ve been looking forward to it for about a month now. I only wanted to matchup with him. I told my coach I didn’t want anybody else.”

Boldt, who’s usually in the 126-pound class, upped his weight specifically to take on Grossman.

“I was really hoping he wouldn’t bump up,” Boldt said. “I just kept saying I want him no matter what, and I weighed-in light today too, so I was really relieved it all worked out and that I was able to get the win.”

“Matt (Grossman) was probably the guy that prohibited Jordan from making it to state last year,” Rank said, “and they’re going to see each other several times yet this year, so this was a great win for him. That was a heck of a match.”

Despite the loss, the Bears are still eyeing a run for the title in a tough conference. Bonduel will get a look at the CWC at conference multi-duals on Friday and Saturday.

“It’ll be interesting to see the results of the multi-duals with Pittsville, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Shiocton and Weyauwega (Fremont). We’re hoping that some of the front runners suffer a loss and we’ll still have a chance at the title at the end of the year. It’s not over yet.”
