Bonduel has no candidates for 3 expiring board seats

All incumbents filed declarations of non-candidacy

Bonduel has no candidates for three expiring village trustee seats in the April election.

Trustees Dick Silbert, Shawn Thorne and Luka Zischka, whose seats are up for election in April, all filed notifications of non-candidacy, and no one else had registered or taken out papers to run for those seats by the filing deadline Tuesday.

Bonduel’s candidate shortage follows months of political upheaval in the village last year that included accusations of a hostile working environment on the village board.

Trustees Joan Kamps, Mary Barney and Margie Qualheim all resigned from the board in July, just three months after the April 2017 election.

Former village clerk Barb Wickman, Bonduel Civic Association organizer Gina Shatters and business owner Kevin Bartlett were appointed to fill those seats, which expire in April 2019.

Village President Sharon Wussow said Friday she does not believe the lack of candidates for the April election has anything to do with the political problems the village board experienced last year.

“That’s just the way it is,” she said. “Nobody wants to get involved. The generation that was always involved is us, and the younger generation doesn’t want to step up.”

Wussow said the board has been running well since last year’s resignations and new appointments.

“It’s very cohesive,” she said. “Everybody gets their say.”

Wussow said she hoped some candidates would come forward and mount write-in campaigns prior to the April 3 election, but if that doesn’t happen, the village will recruit appointees.

“I’m sure we can find people to fill those seats,” Wussow said.

Bonduel has had occasional problems filling vacant trustee positions in the past, going back long before last year’s political turmoil, though it has seldom affected a full slate of expiring seats.

Elsewhere, the Bonduel School Board is also experiencing a candidate shortage for one of its seats.

Judy Rank, representing the village of Cecil and part of the town of Washington, is not seeking another term, and no one has has filed to run for that seat.

Dale Bergsbaken is seeking another term representing the towns of Washington, Angelica and Green Valley and is not facing any challengers.
