Melonnie Sundberg and Craig Carlson have donated toys to the Toys for Tots campaign for many years.

Carlson was raised in Gillett, graduating from Gillett High School. He worked for the Oconto County Highway Department and for the past 28 years has his own business, The Bull Pen in Pulcifer. He has three children and four grandchildren.

Sundberg was raised in Chicago, Minnesota, graduating from Ogilvie High School. She was self-employed at Sundberg Trucking, then worked for Zernicke Trucking, and now is co-owner of The Bull Pen. She has three children and 11 grandchildren.

Carlson and Sundberg worked together on their answers.

Q How did you get started?

A Just over 15 years ago, we got involved with Results Broadcasting for the Toy Crusade.

Q What do you do?

A Back then, we would purchase toys and help wrap the gifts through the Shawano Police Department. They then would deliver the gifts with Santa in the squad car. Then we convinced the Shawano Tavern League to get involved in the Toy Crusade, which we did for several years. One year, we found out that there weren’t enough donations to cover all the kids, so we decided to get involved on our own. We raised money from our Christmas in July Poker Run and a spring golf outing.

Q Why do you do it?

A People have been very generous. Being involved in the program and seeing what it means to the children keeps us going. We feel this is one of the best charities and a great way to give back to our community. These kids through no fault of their own wouldn’t otherwise have a full Christmas. We would like to thank everyone that has helped us make this possible each year. We both feel being active in the toy program brings out the true meaning of Christmas. Merry Christmas!
