Equipment grant given to Boys & Girls Club

Money will increase after-school activities

The Boys & Girls Club of Shawano County was awarded a $1,000 grant from the Joshua J. Richards Charitable Foundation for the purchase of sports equipment at the club’s home at Olga Brener Intermediate School.

The grant was presented by Jackie and Mike Pische, Joshua Richards’ mother and stepfather, during the club’s Oct. 30 Halloween party at Olga Brener. The grant comes from the charitable foundation that was established in the memory of Richards, who died four years ago during an altercation in downtown Appleton.

“Josh was killed in a senseless act of violence. In remembrance of the gift of life given by him, the foundation raises awareness and actively supports organ and tissue donation, as well as sports programs. As Josh was an athlete, assistance is also provided to various youth sports programs in northern Wisconsin,” according to the foundation’s website.

“We are very grateful for this gift and will put the funds to good use,” said Kim Lodewegen, site director of the Boys & Girls Club of Shawano County. “We will be able to acquire a wide variety of sports equipment for specific programming during our after-school sessions. This grant will go a long way in increasing the after-school activities we offer.”

Established in 2016, the Boys & Girls Club of Shawano County is a free-standing chartered site which receives administrative support from the Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay. The Shawano club offers programming and activities for youth between the end of each school day and 5:45 p.m. Youth are mentored and trained by adult staff and also participate in a variety of activities designed to promote a sense of competence, character, confidence and fitness.

Since the launch of programming and activities early in 2017, the club has seen increased participation among students and currently serves an average of 47 students every week.
