Ho-Chunk paying tribute to veterans

Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg will honor fallen warriors and current military veterans with a flag-raising ceremony Saturday.

Originally called Armistice Day after the armistice that was signed Nov. 11, 1918, ending World War I by taking effect at “the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month,” the Veterans Day ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Nov. 11.

Keynote speaker will be Paul Cloud – a Ho-Chunk Tribal Elder and Vietnam combat veteran. He was in active service with the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1968-69 and earned many medals and accolades for his brave service.

A gun salute and taps will be presented by the Birnamwood Darling-Gunderson Post 341 Color Guard. Three Ho-Chunk tribal veterans will raise the flags with the assistance of three of Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg’s security guards, each of whom served in the United States military. The Lake Delton Singers will perform the Ho-Chunk Nation Flag Song.

Special rewards and vouchers will be offered to veterans with proof of military service, and guests are invited into the casino after the flag-raising for prize drawings.
