A Menominee tribal officer was arrested early Thursday after an investigation into a report that the officer was allegedly having inappropriate communication with a 15-year-old juvenile, according to a news release from the tribe’s Intergovernmental Affairs Office.

Authorities received information Sunday night about the alleged contact with the juvenile, which was reportedly taking place via social media.

An immediate and thorough investigation was conducted by detectives of the Menominee Tribal Police Department, assisted by special agents of the FBI and state Department of Criminal Investigations, the office said.

On Wednesday, tribal police, the FBI, and the DCI conducted an undercover operation under the guidance of the U.S. Attorney’s Office that led to the officer’s arrest in the early morning hours Thursday.

Charges are expected to be filed with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. The officer remains in custody.

“This type of situation is never easy for a community,” said Tribal Chairman Gary Besaw. “We commend our Tribal Police Department and partnering agencies for handling this matter in an expedient and professional manner.”

Further information was expected to be released after charges are filed.
