Neal E. Steinberg

Neal Edward Steinberg, 76, of Kimberly, passed away on Oct. 20, 2017. He was born to the late Alfred and Ione (Reinert) Steinberg in New London on March 16, 1941, and was raised on a farm south of New London. He became a child of God through baptism on April 6, 1941, and was confirmed on April 3, 1955, at St John Ev. Lutheran Church, town of Caledonia.

Neal went to grade school at Sandy Knoll (one-room schoolhouse) and graduated from Washington High School, New London. He attended Northwest Institute of Medical Laboratory Technique in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After graduation he accepted a position with Lutheran Hospitals and Homes Society in Lisbon, North Dakota, where he met the love of his life, Marilyn (Pat) Schiffner. They married on March 25, 1961, in Englevale, North Dakota. They had two transfers moving them to Gillette, Wyoming, and Hayward before accepting a position with the Kaukauna Community Hospital in 1964.

He worked at Kaukauna Hospital for 27 years and served as the mayor of the city of Kaukauna for three years. He finished his career with 11 years at Theda Care Physicians, Shawano.

He was active with Kaukauna Kiwanis Club for many years, served on the board of directors for the Community Blood Center and was active in Bethany Lutheran Church, serving on several committees and with the youth group. He also served on the police and fire commission prior to being elected alderman for the Fourth Ward in 1982, which he was through the spring of 1986.

Neal was a Mr. Fix It. Anytime his daughters needed something fixed or made, he was the go-to guy and could do it all. He loved gardening and woodworking. He spent most of his life serving others and God. He loved being a dad, grandfather and a great-grandfather. Family and God were his passion; he was a selfless man who taught all of us so much.

Neal is survived and will be sadly missed by his wife, Marilyn (Pat); his children, Deana (Bob) Schemm, of Kaukauna, Michelle (Craig) Heesacker, of Green Bay, and Paula (Rob Lang) Gerrits, of Kaukauna; grandchildren, Chris (Staci) Schemm, of De Pere, Sarah Schemm (Ryan Westphal), of Kaukauna, Scott (Clare) Diedrich, of Kaukauna, Tyler (Caitlin) Diedrich, of Kaukauna, Kurt (Abbey) Diedrich, of Germantown, Jeremy (Kayla) Huss, of Okinawa, Japan, Andrew Huss, of Kaukauna, Elizabeth Huss, of Kaukauna, Jenna Heesacker, of Green Bay, and Emmy Heesacker, of Green Bay; great-grandchildren, Anabelle, Audrey, Analine, Nora, Nolan and Carson. He is further survived by his brother, Roger (Sharon) Steinberg; sister-in-law, June Steinberg; brother-in-law, Ronald (Beverly) Schiffner; sisters-in-law, Joanne Schiffner and Susan Schiffner; along with many nieces and nephews.

Neal was preceded in death by his parents; Herman Bauer, his stepfather; brother, Leslie; sister, Gloria; his in-laws, George and Gertrude Schiffner; and his brothers-in-law. Jim and John Schiffner.

Memorial services will be held at noon Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 124 W. 10th St., Kaukauna, with Pastor Levi Willms officiating. Friends may call directly at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Boettcher Family Funeral Home, Kaukauna, is assisting the family.

The family would like to give many thanks for the wonderful care of Dr. Werner and the entire Kaukauna Clinic Staff; you were very special to Neal. We would also like to thank Theda Care at Home nurses Amy and Dawn and others, also Pastor Levi and Pastor Walt for their spiritual help. You all have made a huge impact on Neal and us.
