Hawks win tourney in Clintonville

Shawano swept five teams to take first place at the Clintonville Invitational on Saturday.

The Hawks beat St. Mary’s Catholic 25-15, 25-22; Clintonville 25-16, 25-20; Valders 25-15, 25-13; Eastbrook Academy 25-11, 25-6; and Abbotsford 25-16, 25-20.

“The girls keep showing up day-in and day-out, working hard,” head coach Breanna Young said. “We are super proud of them. They set big goals at the beginning of their season and they continue accomplishing their goals and pushing their limits. This weekend was a great team effort all around.”

The Hawks’ leaders were Bayleigh Laabs with 13 kills, three block kills, 68 assists and 35 digs; Averi Vomastic with 12 aces, 27 kills, three block kills and 23 digs; Julia Klement with four aces, 35 kills, six block kills and 27 digs; Kyra Klement with 44 digs and six assists; Brandi Gueths with four aces, 11 kills, seven block kills and 10 digs; Rachel Reed with nine kills and six block kills; and Niki Hoefs with four aces and 18 digs.

Weyauwega-Fremont 2

Bonduel came back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Weyauwega in the five-set match on Tuesday. The Bears lost the first two sets, 21-25 and 23-25, before rallying, 25-13, 25-21 and 15-11.

“We really talked about mental toughness this week and staying strong through the end and picking up our teammates, and this game showed that,” head coach Kim Strayer. “They didn’t let the first two losses get in their head and they fought through the last set.”

McKenzie Wollenberg led the night with 14 kills. Althea Berry had 32 digs. Brynn Reinke recorded 32 assists and six aces, and Kylie Guenter tallied two solo blocks.
