Marianne M. Phalen

Marianne M. Phalen, 87, of Shawano passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family early Thursday morning, July 9, 2015, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Marianne was born on Aug. 28, 1927, in the town of Wescott, Shawano County, a daughter of the late Stefan and Ludvica (Hunya) Greguska. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Grade in Keshena through eighth grade. She later attended Shawano High School, graduating in 1946. After high school, she was employed at the Woolworth Store in Shawano and helped her dad on the farm. On Nov. 8, 1952, she was united in marriage to John J. Phalen Jr. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. Following their marriage, the couple moved to her family farm in the town of Wescott where they lived and farmed until 1965. They then moved to Shawano.

Marianne was a wife, mother, homemaker and farm hand most of her life. Her husband preceded her in death on Aug. 4, 1987. Following her husband’s death, she was employed at the Shawano Evening Leader and Fabrics Plus. Marianne was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. While her children were growing up, she was a Girl Scout leader, and made dresses for the Dress-A-Doll program at Citizens Bank. She was an active member of the Sacred Heart CCW, serving as both president and vice president, as well as serving on the cookbook committee. Marianne worked on the Shawano City Centennial, was a member of the Shawano County Historical Society, which she served as treasurer for many years, served on the building and grounds committee, and verified the names and marriages in Shawano County from 1848 to 1907 for the State Historical Society. She served on the Shawano County Sesquicentennial Committee, and was a member of AARP, serving as president, vice president, and secretary, as well as participating in many committees. Her hobbies included canning, sewing, gardening, playing cards, card club, and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include two sons, John J. (Joyce) Phalen III, of Shawano, and Patrick (Claudia) Phalen, of Vernon Hills, Ill.; three daughters, Kathleen (Tom) Schmitzer, of Chilton, Kristine Phalen of Barcelona, Spain, and Judy (Tom) Laude, of Shawano; 11 grandchildren, Ann (Ryan) Johnson, Michael (Crystal) Phalen, Thomas (Rachel) Schmitzer, Wendy (John) Hein, Jennifer (Tim Sustarich) Schmitzer, Pau Gasco Phalen, Ariel Gasco Phalen, Steven (Ashley) Laude, Sarah (Dylan) Sparks, Daniel Phalen and Marissa Phalen; and six great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Rayn, Olivia, Alex, Ayden, Lane and a great-granddaughter expected in August.

She was preceded in death by one son, Richard Phalen, on May 29, 1979; two brothers, Joseph Greguska and Camillus Greguska; two sisters, Ann Greguska and Martha Sahloff.

A Funeral Mass for Marianne will be celebrated on Saturday, July 18, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano. The Rev. Luke Ferris will be the celebrant. Relatives and friends may call on Friday, July 17, 2015, from 4-7 p.m. in the gathering space at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery.
