Joan Myra Russell

Joan Myra (Powell) Russell, 74, passed away July 3, 2013, in Winter Haven, Fla., following a long, courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Aug. 27, 1938, in Bryant, daughter of the late Raymond and Viola Powell.

She is survived by her husband, Archie, of 56 years, and was a loving mother to David, of Oshkosh, Rick (Kathy), of Shawano, Jeannie (Randy) Zikan, of Phillips, Lisa (Don) Elertson, of Readfield, Jody (Jeff) Dufek, of De Pere, Kelly, of Appleton, and Jason, of Winter Haven, Fla. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was a sister of DuWayne, Leon, Keith (Aggie Brennan) and Valerie (Tom Monsour) Powell, and sister-in-law to Bill Hoffmann.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Carol Hoffmann and Connie Purpura; and a sister in infancy.

Some of the things that Joan enjoyed during her spare time were playing cards and bingo with friends and neighbors from her community. She was a member of Shawano Homemakers and served on the Altar Guild at St. James Lutheran Church and sang in the choir. Joan provided a home to adults and many children in need for nearly 40 years. She will be sadly missed by all, including the family pet, Gunner.

Services were held at Grace Lutheran Church in Winter Haven, Fla., on July 16, 2013. As per her wishes, there will be a private graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano on July 30, 2013.
