BREAKING NEWS: Woman killed and youth injured in early morning fire

A Shawano woman was killed and a young man was injured in an early morning fire Thursday in the 600 block of South Union.

Firefighters were called to the scene about 12:30 a.m. at 628 S. Union, a two-story white house on the corner of Mauer St.

Neighbors said they saw flames on the back and right sides of the house and heard screaming shortly before firefighters arrived.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m., family members were clinging to each other in the street and crying as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

Police cordoned off the area with police tape, wrapping it around telephone pole.

The incident is being treated as a crime, according to coroner Mike Jesse, who was called to the scene shortly before 2 a.m.

The young man was taken to Shawano Medical Center.

The name of the woman who was killed and the young man were being withheld.
