Wichlacz recalled for help he provided other fire chiefs

By Donna Hosbscheid, Leader Reporter

Two area fire chiefs will remember late Pulaski Tri-County Fire Chief Frank Wichlacz for being available as a resource to his fellow firefighters.

“I will remember just the knowledge the gentlman had for fire service and his willingness to share it with anybody who asked,” said Bonduel Fire Department chief Robbie Woldt who knew Wichlacz since becoming a firefighter in 1980. “He was always available to give you advice if you needed it. I always accepted it.”

Wichlacz was a big factor in getting the county-wide mutual aid program together, Woldt said.

“He was very instrumental in getting the Shawano County Firefighters Association off the ground,” Woldt said.

The association allows firefighters to share ideas and costs between departments. Woldt, who is vice president of the group, cancelled the association’s meeting that had been scheduled for Thursday. The meeting has been rescheduled for late August.

Ron Muck, the Cecil-Washington Fire Department chief, also noted that Wichlacz was helpful

“When I first got to fire chief, he always gave me a lot free information and stuff that he experienced to help me out when I first started as chief (14 years ago),” Muck said.

Muck said Wichlacz was considering retiring this year.

“It’s going to be hard to fill his shoes,” Muck said. “He was a nicest guy you want to know in the fire service and personally,” Muck said.

Muck and Wichlacz have a family connection. Muck’s sister Kay married Wichlacz’s son Al about 27 years ago.

“I got to know them all real well,” Muck said.

The Cecil-Washington Department was meeting Wednesday night to discuss plans regarding the funeral.

“It’s a tragedy any way you look at it,” Muck said.
