Schutt wins $25M military contract By Donna Hobscheid, Leader ReporterSchutt Industries, Clintonville, will be making a new type of trailer thanks to a military contract the company received this week. Schutt will manufacture 2,500 to 3,500 8-ton medium cargo trailers under the $25.4 million contract from the U.S. Army. The contract is one of about 25 military contracts Schutt has received in recent years, but one of its largest, President and CEO Jim Schutt said Tuesday evening. “It’s a new contract, but it’s a similar trailer to what we have been making,” Schutt said. The trailer will have a different paint process on it and will be shipped directly to Iraq when completed. “They will haul multiple things. They can be used as a cargo trailer, but they can also haul ISO containers,” Schutt said. Schutt will make the whole trailer, and will be the only company making them. “The Army Tank Automotive Command really congratulated us on the contract that we had and the excellence of our work,” Schutt said. Schutt bid for the contract about 60 days ago and learned of the award Monday in a phone call from the Army, he said. All of the work will be done in Clintonville, starting in October. Schutt said he expects to add employees for the project. The contract lasts through 2011. The company has added about 100 employees in the past five years, the result of military contracts. They are at about 140 employees now. Schutt’s focus is not just military work. “We’re into a lot of commercial trailers and axels that we’re getting into, and eventually some of that will flow into Shawano,” Schutt said. Schutt started an offshoot in Shawano this spring called MT Trailers at Richmond and Lincoln streets. MT Trailer has contracts to make another type of military trailer for a mass assembly for satellite dishes, Schutt said. MT Trailer, which has 27 employees, is acting as subcontractor for a company that makes the mass assemblies. “We’ve worked hard at (the Shawano site). We’re getting it going and it’s going good,” Schutt said. “We’ve got a lot of new projects that will be heading up there.” They have plans to install state-of-the-art paint booths in Shawano and will be doing other pre-treatment work there. MT Trailers have been working for about six months to secure another military contract, and hope to hear soon on that one, Schutt said.
