BREAKING NEWS — Man dies in Gillett fire By Cory Dellenbach, Leader reporterGILLETT — One man is dead after a fire broke out in a building in downtown Gillett early Monday morning. Shortly before 1:30 a.m.., City of Gillett firefighters were called to the Econowash building at 115 Main Street. The lower portion of the building housed the Econowash Laundromat and two apartments above it. Upon arrival, three occupants had escaped, but there was still one man inside. Fire crews got him out and he was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died. The Gillett Fire Department is working with the City of Gillett Police Department, the Oconto County Sheriff’s office and the State Crime Lab - Fire Investigation Unit to determine the cause of the fire. Residents on Monday morning were looking from across the street at the damage done to the building. “I got woken up when the fire trucks came through,” said Beth Hardow of Gillett. “I live just down the street, so I poked my head out and saw all of the fire trucks down there.” It was just two year ago that a fire destroys the American Legion Hall and Bowling Alley that was located just two doors down from the Econowash. Two years before that the Wagner Gas Company office, also located on Main Street, was destroyed by fire.
