Investigation continues into house fire cause

By Kent Tempus, Leader editor

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of a fatal fire in the town of Aniwa Tuesday night.

The blaze claimed the life of Elaine A. Paterson, 79, who lived at W17824 Hill Road, about three miles east of Highway 45 northeast of Birnamwood.

The fire was discovered by a passing motorist about 6:20 p.m. He and a neighbor tried to rescue Paterson, but weren’t able to get into the home because of the intense heat and smoke.

The fire is believed to have started in the lower level of the home, according to a statement issued by the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department.

Randy Giese of the sheriff’s office and a state fire marshal from Appleton were at the home Wednesday in an effort to determine how the fire started.

Paterson’s body was found in her bed on the lower level, said Shawano County Coroner Mike Jesse.

Firefighters were able to begin searching for Paterson until nearly 9 p.m., because of the smoke and the dangerous condition of the burned out residence, which collapsed.

Paterson, who was confined to a wheelchair, lived at the home for several years after moving from Milwaukee, a relative said.

An autopsy was scheduled to be done today, Jesse said.
