Gillett receives $190,000 for Seneca expansion

By Leader Staff Writer

The City of Gillett will receive a $190,000 grant to help facilitate the expansion of Seneca Foods Corp., state officials have announced.

The funding will come from the state Department of Commerce through the Community Development Block Grant-Public Facilities and Economic Development (CDBG-PFED) program.

The grant will go toward the infrastructure necessary to support a business expansion of Seneca’s 146,000 square-foot facility.

“The City of Gillett sincerely appreciates the investment by the State of Wisconsin for this project,” said Gillett mayor Thomas Lietz. “Retention and expansion of our existing employers is our highest priority.”

New York-based Seneca Food Corp. is expanding its facility in Gillett in order to store all of its products on site in Gillett, according to the press release from the Department of Commerce.

A call to the New York office for further comment was not returned Monday afternoon.

The grant will be used for road and utility relocation to accommodate the expansion. The project will retain 35 jobs, and create three additional jobs, the press release said. Total project cost is $6,673,980.

“My administration is committed to helping communities with the infrastructure necessary to support new economic development opportunities,” said Gov. Jim Doyle said. “I am pleased that we could assist the City of Gillett in expanding a proven successful business.”
