Entry removed from display at fair

By Jennifer Woldt, Beaver Dam Daily Citizen

BEAVER DAM -- Nick Schultz has been entering his artwork in the Dodge County Fair since he was 11 years old. Over the years, his artwork, mostly of cars, has won him numerous awards, including Best of Show the past five years.

But this year, two of Schultz's award-winning pieces won't be seen by fairgoers.

After heeding the advice of previous judges and branching out into different subject matters, Schultz's two Anime-styled figure studies were judged and awarded second place ribbons.

But following judging, fair officials requested the 23-year-old Juneau resident take his paintings home, leaving just the tags and his ribbons on display.

"In the past, judges always picked on me because I always entered cars and I'm a car nut," said Schultz, who will be a senior in the fall at UW-Stout, where he is majoring in industrial design.

Pedestrians being ignored at crosswalks

It is early afternoon on a Thursday and an elderly woman in a motorized wheelchair waits to cross at the crosswalk in the middle of the 100 block of South Main Street. Meanwhile, several cars whiz by in both directions. None of them stop. Finally, there is a break in the traffic and she crosses.

Authorities hear flip-side of car-pedstrian debate

After a story in the Shawano Leader earlier this month about the problem of drivers ignoring pedestrians at the crosswalk in the 100 block of South Main Street, officials got an earful from drivers giving a flip side to the car versus pedestrian debate.
